Nobody is perfect nor is nobody’s life perfect; one way I like to think of it is that we are all a work of art in progress. With this in mind we could all use some advice about work, motivation, relationships, productivity – you name it.

If everyone were perfect that would leave no room for improvement in our lives.

By improvement I am referring to an improvement: this involves working on some of the less desirable traits and habits- things like lacking self-confidence, struggling to communicate our emotions, our procrastination etc.

This is where self-help books can come in handy. Although self-help books can make all the difference, they are not a replacement for seeking help from mental health professionals.

If you are dealing with a mental illness seek out a credentialed person you can speak with in person  (or over video call).

I browsed the self help section of the virtual bookstore and found just what you need.

So next time you are in need of some inspiration, advice or a little pep-talk pick up one of these self-help books; guaranteed to change your life ready for 2022.

In addition to this these books can all be found on Amazon and other online retailers.

Here are the best self-help books you need in your life:

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Coelho tells the story of a young shepherd boy named Santiago who was able to find a treasure beyond his wildest dreams. His journey led him to his destiny.

Along the way Santiago runs into many obstacles and the journey quickly becomes an adventure, whilst passing each obstacle and hurdle he encounters there is a lesson to be learned. Each lesson teaches Santiago that no matter what he must always follow his heart, as It is the language of God.

Throughout the book the constant theme is to pursue your dreams by following what your heart truly desires.

Santiago lines to use and listen to his heart to overcome fear. He lives to listen to his soul, to never lose hope aside when faced with adversity. He learns to disregard the influences of society and focus on his own journey.

The Alchemist has many lessons and pieces of inspiration sprinkled throughout the story, this book is a must read ahead of 2022.

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offers to show you how we have been domesticated from childhood, how these internal guiding rules hurt and impact us and what we can do to break free and replace them with a new set of agreements.

One of my favourite quotes from Ruiz is, “ Death is not the biggest fear we have; our biggest fear is taking the risk to be alive – the risk to be alive and express what we really are“ .

The four main points Ruiz make are:
-        to be more impeccable with your word
-        Don’t take anything personally
-        Don’t make assumptions
-        Always do your best

This book is another must have.

The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle

Tolle explores and shows that every second and minute spent worrying about what is yet to come or regretting and stressing over what cannot be changed is a minute lost. Because after all, all you really have to live in is the present moment. The here and now!

My favourite quote from Ruiz is “Realise deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the now the primary focus of your life”. This is so true!

Why obsess and cause yourself distress over what cannot be changed or is yet to come?

We are often so caught up living in the past or the future we forget and lose sight of what’s important and happening now. The mind is a superb instrument if used correctly, if used incorrectly it can be our worst enemy.

The power of now helps us to discover our true inner being, release all the pain we’ve been storing and holding onto and how to find deep inner piece.

Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Published originally in 1937 this is one of the all-time self-help classics and a must read.

Thinking very rich is a result of hills research on many millionaires to find out what made them successful. He examined the power of personal beliefs and the role that they play in our personal success.

Throughout the book Hill projects the following formula:
Desire + ideas + plans + massive actions = success.

After all the starting point of all achievements is desire and whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.

Atomic Habits by James Clear

An atomic habit is a regular practice or routine that is not only small and simple but also easy to do. Changes that seem unimportant and my new advice will compound into remarkable results, if you are able to stick with them.

Clear says “ success is the product of daily habits – not once in a life time transformation”

Atomic habits is the ultimate guide to breaking bad habits and adopting positive ones in for detailed easy to follow steps. Showing you how minute, incremental, every day routines compound into massive, positive change over time.

You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay

Originally published in 1984, ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ was one of many pioneers in self-help books.

Hey talks about how our thoughts and beliefs shape our lives, and that self-love is the key to all self-healing.

At the beginning of each chapter she begins with an affirmation and includes one or more exercises or treatment. The book was wrote in the same way she takes a client through a private session or workshop.

In the end chapter Hay speaks of her difficult personal history which led her to write this book.
Since release it has sold over 60 million copies in 30 countries.

The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

Covey emphasises that before you can adopt the seven habits you must first change your perception and interpretation of how the world works (paradigm shift).

A paradigm shift is a way to see/perceive the world.

That we see the world, not as it is, but as we are conditioned to see it.

Throughout Covey makes the point that to make relatively minor changes in your life, to focus on your attitudes and behaviours. But to make significant quantum change, work on your basic paradigms.

Our paradigms, correct or incorrect are the sources of attitudes and behaviours, and ultimately our relationships with others“

You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero

This bestselling book is your guide to living life to the fullest. Sincero provide hilariously inspiring stories, easy but powerful strategies to follow, and analysis of what’s holding you back and the occasional swearword; served up in twenty seven easy to follow bite-sized chapters.

By the end of ‘You Are A Badass’ you will understand why are you are how you are, how to make peace with what you cannot change, how to change what you do not love and how to break bad habits so you can truly live out the life of your dreams.

As well as become the badass you always wanted to be.

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

Based on the law of attraction and the early film of the same name (can be found on Netflix), which claims your thoughts create your life whether good or bad.

Byrne explains the power of positive thinking that like attracts like, which means that if you emit a positive energy you attract positive things/people into your life and how you can use the power of positive thinking to achieve anything you can imagine.

In addition Byrne also explains to use the law of attraction you must think about what you want and not about what you want to avoid. The three steps to the law of attraction are asking, believing and receiving.

In conclusion with only five months left of the year focus on becoming the person you’ve always wanted to become, focus on what truly matters to you and don’t compare your journey to someone else’s!
