Thermal Transfer Printing, also known as TT Printing, is the process where digital print material is applied by melting resin-based ink or wax ribbons with high-resolution, long-lasting text and images to a product. This technology has been around since 1940, and still, it is massively used in label packaging. Manufacturers use thermal transfer prints to print labels due to their high resistance to moisture and heat, which allows for long-lastingness.
Moreover, with the help of labelling, a business can achieve a wide range of goals easily. Like Inventory and asset management, keeping track of coming and going goods in the company, the movement of the goods, etc.
How does a Thermal Transfer Printing Work?
The TTP process is based on heat to produce results. The ribbon is run between the label material and the thermal print head during this process. As the thermal print head heats up, it causes thermal transfer ribbon ink to melt, resulting in print media developing the designated image. The surface of thermal transfer printed labels usually has a very crispy and glossy surface.
Advantages of Thermal Transfer Printing (TTP)
There are many advantages of TTP. Some of them are:
Thermal Transfer Labels (TTL) are very durable and can last long in any environmental condition. For example, they will not fade in the sunlight or be exposed to high temperatures. Moreover, it is also smudge-free and will not distort after coming in contact with water, oil or most chemicals.
TTLs are low maintenance compared to other printing methods as they only print black and white.
Allows a batch or single label printing with no to minimal waste.
Can print a large quantity of media stock in one go.
You can add a combination of text and images to your labels or packaging.
A wide range of print options to add. Like logos, text, barcodes, and QR codes.
Disadvantages of Thermal Transfer Printing (TTP)
The thermal transfer ribbon is very difficult to recycle.
It has only two colour options which are black and white.
If exposed to high temperatures and sunlight for a long time, the label eventually will turn black.
Higher Supply Cost - TTP is suitable for businesses with a wide range of products. However, it will be very costly for businesses with limited products.
