It was in Super Bowl XXXVI that Patten caught Brady’s first touchdown pass against the Rams leading the Patriots to a 20-17 victory o February 3, 2002. Thus, igniting the fuse to a franchise dynasty. Words like mentor, and brother and great man have been emblazoned on twitter by former Patriot’s teammate, Deion Branch.

His career began in 1997 as being an undrafted free agent and out of Western Carolina and then the Giants immediately snatched him up. It wasn’t until 2001that he became a free agent after spending time with both the NT Giants and the Cleveland Browns. The New England Patriots saw the vast potential in him and signed him on to their roster. His NFL career stats included playing for the then known Washington Redskins, and the New Orleans Saints. In a total of 324 catches, in 147 games, 24 touchdowns, and 4,715 yards. One of his greatest moments was when he scored on a kick return and scored a touchdown. Patten defied the odds to earn a job in the NFL and be a instrumental player on multiple championship teams.

His work ethic was unparallel as he set an example for his teammates. He exuded positive energy. Of all the team helmets that he donned; it was the Patriots one that made him shine. Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots professed that Patten had gathered a ministry by following his passion and being a Christian. Patten abilities were underestimated. At first, he didn’t look the part of being in the league due to his size. But a metamorphosis occurred changing him into a powerful wide receiver. Accomplishments he made were him being a three-time Super Bowl Champion. It was during the AFC   championship against the Pittsburg Steelers that launched the Patriots to Super Bowl XXXVI.

Bill Belichick is heartbroken over the news. He said that such a tragedy should never have happened. He says that he was grateful to have been given the chance to coach Patten. He is an essential player in Patriots history, and without him they wouldn’t have been Super Bowl Champions. He is in the staring lineup in heaven now. He leaves behind his wife Galiena.
