Introduction
McDonald’s is one of the most well-known and famous places across the world known for its reasonably priced fast food menu. Subway is also a well-known place across the world for selling healthy subs and salads although it is still classed as a fast food place. It is very shocking to find out that subway is actually classed to be more famous than McDonald’s in the world.
The history of McDonald’s
McDonald’s was created by two brothers which is where the name come from due to their last name being McDonald. The first restaurant was started in 1948 in a place called San Bernardino in California which started originally as a hamburger place. From 1955 onwards McDonald’s started to become successful and the goal was to open 1,000 restaurants in America. However, in 1967, McDonald’s expanded to other countries such as Canada and Puerto Rico. Today in 2021 there are over 36,000 McDonald’s restaurants in 100 nations across the world. in 2017 McDonald’s was available to order to your house on the Uber Eats app as well as the Just Eat app which gains it more and more business.
The history of Subway
Subway stores started when a nuclear physicist called Dr Peter Buck, the first subway store opened in August 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. There was a goal set to open at least 32 stores in 10 years which didn’t quite happen due to them having 16 stores open by 1974 which led the franchise of subway to launch into a brand which continued the growth of the business to this day. Subway have restaurants in 95 countries. Today, subway is the largest submarine sandwich branch in the world with 44,000 stores around different locations across the world. Subway had success in the United States due to a push in international markets because it had a franchise based model which has emphasised low cost small outlets for subway. Again subway is also available to order on Uber Eats and Just Eat making it more successful and creating more business for them.
McDonald’s Vs Subway
McDonald’s seems like it would be the most famous fast food place in the world due to its popularity, but shocking results shown that subway is actually classed as the most famous fast food place across the world. This surprises me because McDonald’s was built and opened 18 years before subway did suggesting that McDonald’s should have more stores than subway. However, if you compare the number of stores across the world subway has quite a lot more than McDonald’s with it having 44,000 stores compared to McDonald’s having roughly around 36,000. Even since 2011 subway has overtaken McDonald’s with their number of stores worldwide. McDonald’s are still growing of course but they deem to be ‘better not just bigger’. McDonald’s has stores in more places across the world compared with subway. Subway employs around 70,000 people across the world however McDonald’s employ around 210,00 so a large difference considering subway have more stores across the world. McDonald’s seems to have a larger geographical representation compared with subway, on the other hand subway dominates certain places such as the United Kingdom, Australia, North America and India. Additionally, McDonald’s has exceeded subway stores in some locations such as China, Japan, Europe and South America.
Conclusion
McDonald’s does seem to exceed subway in many areas however subway dominate the amount of stores across the world which is the reason as to why they are classed to be more famous. It is quite obvious that McDonald’s is deemed to be more popular all over the world McDonald’s is loved by all different age groups and always has business throughout the day wherever it may be. However, subway has more stores across the world making them more famous worldwide although McDonald’s do not aim to be bigger they just want to be better than other places which they have proved due to their popularity.
