I, Mohammad S A A Alothman, have first-hand experiences on AI in developing and implementing tech solutions. Thus, there arises a relevant question of what would happen if we are too dependent on AI.
In this article, I will discuss the consequences of AI dependence and the way AI usability should be carefully balanced in the following years.
We can unmistakably identify the benefits brought about by AI. This is why critically assessing what risks may occur from having an overdependence on AI technology is important. AI reliance could change the way we, as individuals or collectively, have developed.
It can influence the ability to decide, solve problems, and even have influence on societal structures. An advocate for responsible AI is a person who aspires to study the potential impacts of dependency on AI and how a balance between usage of such power and retaining human control can be achieved.
In this paper, I, Mohammad S A A Alothman, discuss the concept of AI dependence, its effects on AI usability, and how AI tech solutions must evolve in such a way that they do not compromise our human autonomy or decision-making capability while serving humanity.
It's not hard to get lost in the sea of AI-infused features in our everyday lives to forget that AI is a tool that may fail, or more subtly, influence the ways in which we think and act, manipulatively.
Loss, or atrophy, of human agency is a second and probably major anxiety connected with reliance on AI. If people get too reliant on their AI, then the person's faculties of skills, intuition, and critical thinking may atrophy.
From my experience working with AI tech solutions, it's pretty clear that AI can be a very useful tool for improvement in decision-making but should not be appealed to as an absolute oracle. AI tech solutions exist to analyze data, discover patterns, and provide suggestions. But if we go to believing in them much, we slip into missing the even more profound mysteries about the nature of judgment of men.
As such, AI systems are used today in the range of, health diagnostics, to employment decisions, among others, and while they are able to process data in magnitudes of time by humans, they also did not view context in the same level, perhaps failing to take account to nuances that a human professional would see.
Also, dependency on AI may reduce personal responsibility. As most decisions are outsourced to machines, we may get more and more alienated from the outcome of our own actions. Also, in automated financial trading systems, for example, investors may completely rely on an AI algorithm to trade instead of knowing the logic of the AI dictates. This is a recipe for disaster, which may trigger financial crises, unforeseen incidents, etc.
No doubt, AI is a tool for improving AI usability across applications. From self-driving cars to virtual assistants, AI systems have demonstrated the ability to increase productivity and efficiency. As we integrate these systems further into our lives, we need to question whether over-reliance on AI is undermining AI usability.
The problem is that we are to retain the smoothness of AI and how intuitively convenient it's supposed to be, not adding complexity artificially where things become so complex that don't even make sense.
With advanced AI tech solutions, they must ensure these are designed with human oversight maintained. Never should AI fully replace human input. Or rather, AI should only improve human decision making to make more rational decisions.
For example, in health, AI tech solutions can now be used in the analysis of medical images with a lot of accuracy. This does improve AI's access to medical practitioners, but AI systems must be viewed as second opinion and not as replacing knowledge of doctors. It is all a matter of avoiding loss of the humanly required knowledge and experience which AI may make.
But if we get AI usability in a balanced way, it is possible that technology may make meaningful performance enhancements without turning into an unreasonable replacement of human effort. But when we become victims to the trap of AI dependence, then it can become a situation when people can no longer be useful unless they are at the mercy of machines.
The pace of development of AI Tech Solutions has been immense with new applications being developed almost every day. AI tech solutions promise a future where humans and machines work together to solve complex problems, but these solutions must be deployed with caution.
The increasing extent of AI in fields ranging from production to service sectors underlines the importance of designing AI solutions that include robust, ethical and transparent guidelines, and addresses accountability.
The challenge is how to guide AI tech solutions to be designed in ways that minimize risk, inter alia, bias within AI models or weaknesses within AI algorithms. As systems become more complex, design needs to push practical useful AI solutions that not only work efficiently and ethically but fairly.
AI algorithms are only as good as the training data are. If information is biased, then AI systems can unwittingly reproduce those biases and create systemic problems in hiring, loaning, or in the decision-making processes of the criminal justice system.
Including, finally, a loop – a means of testing and refining the AI itself – will be a core component of building responsibly applied AI tech solutions. In this way generated solutions are grounded in practical, everyday, out of reality data and challenges they are feasible as well as performing.
Continued growth and development in this AI means that the importance of also added features – flexibility or explainability, is necessary in these solutions.
What happens if we become too reliant on AI? The future will be defined by how we choose to engage with AI and how we keep the right balance between automation and human involvement. Reliance on artificial intelligence will increase, but it is important that we proactively address the risks that may arise.
At some point in the future, it will even reach the level of high seamless AI usability that allows for smoother integration into our daily lives. Imagine a world in which AI systems optimize energy usage in buildings, predict health issues before they become a reality, or design personalized learning paths for students. The opportunities are infinite, but they must be handled with care.
We must also ensure that an AI tech based solution does not make us a passive bystander in the decisional process. Though AI may be helpful in such efficiency, we should not lose the human faculty to question, resist, and override an AI recommendation when appropriate. The work should be an enhancement of human faculties, not to replace them.
Although AI dependence and AI usability hold much promise, it must be handled very carefully. As we develop and integrate AI tech solutions, it is very important to remember the role of human judgment and oversight. The function of the AI is to work beside human work, not replace the man.
Through responsible design and careful implementation, it can be ensured that AI would serve to our best in our daily life and not undermine our self-determination and decision-making capabilities.
AI is undoubtedly the future; however, it is now up to us to ensure its arrival into society is properly timed and does not go against any rules of institutions' fairness, transparency, and ethical principles. AI will remain within limits while reaping benefits for humanity once it is applied in responsible usage.
