Black is my favorite color. It is a fashion staple and appears in every capsule wardrobe. The LBD has been essential since Coco Chanel changed the game in 1926. Unfortunately, if your closet primarily is filled with black clothing, your outfits can sometimes appear similar each day. Fear not! Here are five ways to elevate your chic all-black style to the next level.
Although the all black look is very chic, a way to make it even better is carefully weaving in your signature color. Now, there are two ways to do this. The first is using one accessory, such as your handbag, as the star. Grab that bright red leather purse sitting on the shelf, and add the pop of color. Alternatively, incorporating a signature color more frugally can also improve your outfit. Wear a burgundy headband or scarf, and pair it with similarly toned boots. If it's cold (like where I am) a pair of matching gloves will add style points to your outfit score.
2. Choose delicate jewelry over statement pieces
Contrary to popular belief, when wearing a dark monochrome outfit, adding giant hoops or a large pendant necklace is not the route to go. Unfortunately, it can look a bit costumey or even worth of Mass In Jersey Shore. That is not the style we are addressing here- the goal is to elevate. Delicate jewelry always looks much more classy and elegant, especially when paired with an all black outfit. Opt out of the thick gold hoops and instead select silver studs or delicate small hoops. Match that with a thin chain necklace (think Tiffany's classic heart pendant). If silver jewelry is not your favorite, a gold cuff and similarly toned earrings is another pairing that adds a much-needed element. Black has an elegance on its own, but sometimes dressing it up even more tastefully is what's needed.
3. Going casual? Pay attention to hems, tucks, and silhouettes.
The last two tips have been generalized, but apply a bit more to dressier outfits. Let's be realistic. A lot of all black outfits are jeans or slacks, a t-shirt, and sneakers/flats. So how can that be elevated? It's all in the details. Cuff the bottoms of your jeans so a little ankle shows. Make sure if the shirt is tucked in that there is now ballooning or visible bunching. Take the time to steam (or iron) the clothing items. When an outfit is so casual, it is imperative that the littlest details are thought of. That is what creates the effortless, off-duty look that is so sought over.
4. Coats are everything
I understand that not everyone lives in a colder climate (hi Arizona!) but this is a tip is focused on those of us who endure temperatures below 70 during fall and winter. Obviously, all black ensembles are much more popular during the colder seasons, but along with that comes outerwear. If done properly, you'll stay warm and improve the look. A rule of thumb- long coats typically have a more elegant air than mid-cut. Do NOT wear a black coat over your already dark outfit- opt for a nude or gray if you like neutrals, or a burgundy or navy coat if colors are more your style.
5. Don't forget the other neutrals
I've mentioned it in an earlier tip but don't forget the other neutrals on the color wheel! In my humble opinion, nothing elevates a black outfit more than nude. Rock those black slacks with a pair of nude stilettos. If you are wearing black over the knee boots, a black top, black sweater, choosing a gray skirt instead of black adds an appearance of thought and detail.
At the end of the day, it is pretty hard to go wrong with an all black look. However, paying attention to these details and incorporating other elements is a sure-fire way to elevate your outfit and add an air of sophistication. It's important to look as though you belong at NYFW and not behind the supermarket setting off smoke bombs. Jokes aside, there is nothing wrong with maintaining a casual vibe (see tip #3) but at the same time, taking a few extra moments to tweak the look can make all the difference and bring all the elegance.
