The films that take you at the edge of your seats and keeps you wondering about what is going to happen next. The thing about people loving horror movies more than anything else is that it takes them to the world which one has never seen before, which excites, frightens, and thrills at the same time.

Horror is one such genre that is quite different from others as it has horrific things or concepts that you have never seen before. The genre is so vast that it consists of various categories like psychological horror, thriller-horror, supernatural horror, and so on. But every horror movie has that one specific horrific or an evil element around which the story revolves, creating a curiosity among the audience about the spine chilling twists and turns the movie holds.

Below are some of the horror movie recommendations along with what eerie elements and storyline they consist of which makes them distinct from other horrors as well as some interesting trivia about the film:

  • VERONICA (2017)

"Whatever you don't say goodbye to, stays with you."

Based on a true story, Veronica is a Spanish film based on a young girl named Veronica who plays an Ouija board with her friends at the time of the solar eclipse to conjure her dead father’s spirit. As the session goes wrong, Veronica starts facing paranormal activities. She realizes that it’s not her father’s spirit but a more powerful evil force has arrived.

Horror Element:

As the whole school goes up the roof to watch the solar eclipse Veronica and her two friends help her out in calling her dad's spirit by use of the Ouija board in the school basement. In one of its scenes when the teacher talks about the solar eclipse she states clearly that how some of the ancient cultures use the solar eclipse time to summon dark spirits and for human sacrifices.

When they conduct the séance that's when the glass gets so hot that two of her friends remove their hands, but Veronica doesn't. So the glass breaks and Veronica becomes unconscious and screams loudly. From that exact point of time, it all starts as she experiences paranormal activities. She wanted to perform the séance with a motive to contact her dad's spirit but the whole thing turns out to be a ghostly disaster.

The nun in her school even warns Veronica that she has got herself into trouble by conducting the séance and now at any cost, she has to protect her siblings from these paranormal activities.

Interesting Trivia:

  1. The movie is said to be based on true events that happened in the year 1991 with a family. A girl named Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro played the Ouija board with her friends to contact one of her friend’s boyfriend who died in a motorcycle accident. But the teacher interrupted their session. After that point, she started facing paranormal activities, seizures, and hallucinations. After her unexplained death, the paranormal activities increased, and even officers were unable to crack this investigation.
  2. One of the paintings in Veronica’s house was of the pack of wolves swallowing the deer which depicts the condition of Veronica.
  3. This was the first film of the actress who played the role of Veronica.

  • ORPHAN (2009)

"You will never guess her secret."

A parent who recently lost their baby decides to adopt a child from the local orphanage. After adopting Esther as a child they feel that their happiness is back until when the adopted child who pretends to be innocent turns out to be devilish.

Horror Element:

After suffering the loss of their child, it’s not easy for Kate (mother) to come out of the sorrow of her child. Later when they adopt a Russian girl named Esther with a motive that all will become well in their lives. But something feels suspicious as Esther doesn’t seem to be a normal orphan. When the parents visit the orphanage, she found her to be very lonely and different from other children in the orphanage and her weird drawings seem to depict something else. Right from when she stepped into the house slowly-slowly led to unusual events happening in their house and all events suspect to be having a connection with the orphan. Will the family ever get rid of this orphan or will she create threats to the family’s life? 

Interesting Trivia :

  1. When the family takes Esther home from the orphanage, one can see sister Abigail saying her goodbye, and then she crossed her fingers behind her back.
  2. The filmmakers were impressed by Isabelle Furkman’s auditions, even when she did not fit in the described description, she was cast anyway.
  3. The screenplay of this film was featured in the blacklist 2007 (the most liked, unmade scripts of the year).
  4. Isabelle’s role as Esther won a Fright Meter Award for the best actress in 2009.

  • THE RING (2OO2)

"Before you die, you see the ring."

The film is a combination of horror and thriller, and a remake of a Japanese movie with the same name. The mysterious death of 4 teenagers, leads to Rachel Keller investigating the case. She finds out its a tape causing deaths because when one views it, he/she dies within a week. She tries to unravel the truths behind the tape. Will she be able to do it after watching the tape herself, the clock is ticking!

Horror Element:

As when Katie, Rachel’s niece dies because of watching the tape of the whole horrific incident, and her death is noticed by her friend Becca who later is institutionalized. When Rachel finds the videotape and watches it, she sees very disturbing images in the videotape which makes her curious about what the images in the videotape depict.

It had images like the horses drowning, a woman committing suicide, blood rushing in the ocean, a strange girl sitting on a chair, and other ununderstandable imagery. On the other hand, Rachel’s son Aiden who studies mediumship makes some strange drawings, and when she asked him the reason behind those drawings he confronts by saying - “because she told me too”. Rachel tries to solve the mystery behind the disturbing visuals, with little time in hand to stop this.

Interesting Trivia: 

  1.  More than 2 million DVD copies were sold in the US alone in the first 24 hours of the video release.
  2. If one looks carefully at the girl from the videotape she lacks fingernails, because of climbing out of the well for 7 days.

  • THE GRUDGE (2020):

"Once you enter the house, it will never let you go."

Detective Muldoon is assigned to be the partner of Detective Goodman for an investigation of a murder case. Later they find out that the murder site is the house that is cursed by a vengeful ghost who kills anyone who enters the house. Detective Muldoon decides to break the curse of the house while she fears the safety of her son.

Horror Element:

The film is a supernatural horror, based on a cursed house. When someone visits the house, eventually leads to a violent death. In the first scene itself, it shows how a housewife murders her own family in the same house because she was possessed by a ghost.

When detective Muldoon and Goodman investigate the recent murder, detective Goodman tells her how his partner Wilson lost his life because he was obsessed with the murder case that happened in that house. Soon, when Muldoon enters the house, even she starts experiencing the paranormal activities. Even though she is concerned about her son, she still decides to carry on with the investigation.

Interesting Trivia :

  1. It was planned to reboot the whole film script by writing a new storyline that abandons the Saeki family.
  2. The posters were decorated with black hair at the time of the theatrical release outside the theatres.
  3. In the film, the house number is 44, and 4 is considered as bad luck in Japanese culture because the number is a homophone for the character meaning death.

  • OUIJA (2014)

"Keep telling yourself, its just a game."

Debbie’s sudden death creates questions in the mind of her best friend Laine. Laine gets to know about the Ouija board in Debbie’s room and convinces her sister and her friends to join her to communicate with her dead best friend. 

While trying to contact her through ouija they experience few paranormal activities around them and they realize that they have connected with a spirit called DZ. To avoid the consequences they plan to stop the doorway of evil.

Horror Element:

In the first scene itself its shown that Debbie burns the ouija board without saying it goodbye which conveys that she had already played it alone in the first place and has opened the doorway of the evil.

Its a rule of the ouija board that you can't play it alone and it’s compulsory to say goodbye to the board. After Debbie commits suicide, Laine and her friends start experiencing the bad spirits. One by one, every person in the group ends up horrified by the evil activities around them. Will they find a solution to stop all this or will fate repeat itself forcing them to end their life just like Debbie.

Interesting Trivia :

  1. This film is Hasbro studios' first film.
  2. The founder of the manufacturing company of the Ouija boards said that he kept the name Ouija by asking the board what it wanted to be called. The name can be either pronounced as “wee jaa” or “wee gee”.
  3. “Keep telling yourself it's just a game” has been used as an advertising tagline for the ouija game.
