Even as we are confined to our homes, and cobwebs gather in our favorite theaters and comedy clubs, there are some comics committed to bringing us laughter any way they can. Of the wealth of podcasts and YouTube streams worth tuning in to in 2021— one comedy podcast particularly stands out.
Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer’s show “2 Bears 1 Cave” provides weekly episodes on YouTube, with an audio-only version on iTunes, as well as premium live-streaming online events exclusive to their website, “ymhstudios.com.”
You may know one or both members of this comedy duo from their numerous Netflix specials, or their standout appearances on “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
Bert Kreischer has spent most of his life in the spotlight. He first gained notoriety in 1997 while attending Florida State University as a 6th-year senior. When “The Princeton Review” named Florida State University as the “top party school” in the country, Rolling Stone visited the campus to do a story, only to find that the real scoop was all about Bert. Naming him as “the top partyer at the Number One Party School” in the country, Rolling Stone helped establish a brand and a schtick that defines Kreischer even 20 years later.
Kreischer is the quintessential frat-boy, and his drunken escapades as documented by Rolling Stone even went on to inspire the script for the movie, “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder.” Kreischer has stated that being featured in Rolling Stone was an inspiration to pursue a career in comedy.
Likewise, Tom Segura has been a stand-up comic ever since his early 20s. He would passionately perform at bars and small clubs each night while waking up to clock-in to a day-job the next morning. His passion and dedication duly paid off, earning him appearances at large events in the world of comedy such as the “Melbourne International Comedy Festival,” “Just for Laughs Comedy Festival,” and “The Global Comedy Festival.”
Finally in 2014, Segura’s stand-up special entitled “Completely Normal” emerged as one of the first, great stand-up comedy specials on Netflix, propelling Segura from an underground comedy favorite to practically a household name. Since then, he has taken the world of podcasting by storm.
Originally, podcast goliath Joe Rogan encouraged Tom and his wife, Christina Pazsitzky (an excellent stand-up comic in her own right) to start a podcast of their own, after the couple shared a hilarious appearance on the popular podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Rogan’s advice led to the start of “Your Mom’s House Podcast,” along with “Your Mom’s House Podcast Network.”
“Your Mom’s House Podcast,” hosted by Tom and Christina, is something of a modern answer to the clip shows of the past, sending “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Tosh.0” running for their money. Tom and Christina take a deep dive into the most disgusting yet compelling internet videos, all the while exposing their guests and fans to sides of humanity that we never thought we would see—yet we cannot stop laughing at.
Bert Kreischer of course became a popular guest on “Your Mom’s House,” just as he and Tom were established guests on “The Joe Rogan Experience.” It became all too clear that Bert and Tom were deserving of their own show, where their comradery would take the center stage; and thus the show “2 Bears 1 Cave” was created, out of popular demand.
Considering the wild success of these comedians in their respective careers, it may sound bold to assert that they are truly hitting their stride in a time when state mandates prevent most of us from seeing their act. Yet against all odds, the two comics, along with the staff of Segura’s company, “Your Mom’s House Podcast Network,” have elevated podcasting and comedy to new heights, just when you thought you couldn’t feel lower.
10 to 15 years ago, when podcasting was just emerging as a new medium—some of the best moments on staple podcasts like “WTF with Marc Maron,” or “The Joe Rogan Experience” came from candid conversations, rather than the contrived interviews or scripted scenes we are used to seeing on Late Night TV.
With “2 Bears 1 Cave,” Segura and Kreischer provide these same candid, comedic gems every week. These two stooges have distilled the silliest moments of “The Joe Rogan Experience” into a 90 minute, consistently funny weekly gag.
Kreischer’s tell-all, shameless stories exploit everything from his daughter’s personal life to his own questionable drinking habits, while Segura’s ruthless wit is an engine for an onslaught of inside-jokes and gross-out humor. The dialogue and comedic-chemistry between longtime friends, Bert and Tom, is enough to float their podcast—yet the duo insists on pushing themselves and their audience to the absolute limit by engaging in friendly, yet sometimes dangerous, filmed competitions.
So far we have seen Bert and Tom “serve” each other with their own hip-hop dance videos, literally serve each other in a tennis match, and attempt a game of basketball that left one of the boys brutally injured. That didn’t stop them from airing the footage of this catastrophe on their New Years' Eve live podcast, in a segment that would make the cast of “Jackass” cringe and hoot with laughter all at once.
These live events, the third of which is coming up on February 7th, are truly where “2 Bears 1 Cave” sets itself apart from other podcasts hosted by comedians. Seeing the duo live and uncensored brings an intimacy only found in small comedy clubs, and by hosting the show from Segura’s own website, ymhstudios.com, the team can provide even more inappropriate content than allowed to be shown on YouTube. The upcoming event will serve as an unofficial companion show to NFL Superbowl 2021, where Bert and Tom will be accompanied by NFL Hall of Famer Warren Sapp. Hilarity is sure to ensue.
While quarantine may keep us from attending the same Super Bowl Party as we did last year, “2 Bears 1 Cave,” along with the rest of the staff at “Your Mom’s House Podcast Network” are here to keep us company, and to keep the laughter coming.
